Did you know that Walmart is trying to build a giant supercenter in the heart of Midtown? Did you know that they DO NOT want to follow the same rules that every other Midtown business has to follow?
The City of Miami is proposing changes to Midtown Miami’s zoning and design rules and regulations to make it easier for Walmart to build and service a 185,000 sq. ft. supercenter in Midtown. The City and Walmart want it to appear as if the proposed changes are harmless, described simply as changes to service access and loading points. However, we know better. THESE CHANGES WILL COMPLETELY ALTER THE CHARACTER OF MIDTOWN, which has flourished under the existing rules and regulations designed to create a true urban community. The potential negative effects of the proposal include (i) a significant increase in service and delivery traffic in Midtown, (ii) a decrease in the pedestrian traffic that creates the neighborhood feel of Midtown, and (iii) turning a huge portion of Midtown into a single-use supercenter, rather than a mixed-use block. The City’s proposal is short-sighted and will ultimately injur the Midtown community’s development. Join us in telling the City of Miami – NO SPECIAL TREATMENT FOR WALMART!
If Walmart wants to come to Midtown, they should play by the existing rules and regulations – NO EXCEPTIONS. This is our community, help us protect it.

Wait, so you’re objecting to having a Wal-Mart (affordable stuff for the poor people that actually live in that neighborhood) on a now empty lot in Midtown because … there will be TRUCKS delivering the affordable stuff for the poor people?

Hi Alesh, we are not opposing Walmart to come to the City of Miami. We are opposing DDR to change the rules in Midtown for any big box uit, which is Walmart. Also, other locations such as NE 2nd Ave and NW 18th Street and Biscayne and 79th Street have been proposed to Walmart. These locations are within 5 miles from Midtown, with better public transportation and closer to major highways and intersections.
I’d just like to express how I find it disturbing that you DON’T oppose a(nother) Walmart store being built in Miami. I work in midtown and appreciate how far it has come from ten years ago. A Walmart will obliterate any semblance of progress this area has achieved
When a Walmart is built, there are a few things you can count on: increased crime, decreased regional wages, exacerbated traffic issues, surrounding small businesses closing their doors, decreased property values, and a slew of new discrimination law suits in the local court system.
I have been traveling 10+ miles to Walmart in NMB and Okeechobee for years and I think Walmart would be a great asset to the neighborhood regardless of changes

Walmart’s latest application to build a Super Walmart will be heard by the Urban Design Review Board on February 20th, 2013 at 2:00 pm at City Hall in Coconut Grove. As expected, the latest scheme violates the Midtown Overlay District Plan.
